WHAT IS THE BODY POSITIVITY MOVEMENT?
Body positivity is the notion that everyone deserves a positive body image, despite of what society and popular culture define ideal shape, size, or appearance as. The body positivity movement aims to change how society perceives the body, and among other things, encouraging acceptance of all body types.
HOW IT EFFECTS PEOPLE:
In today’s society body image is one of the biggest problems being pursued due to the fact that from a young age we’re being exposed to all of these unattainable body types and constantly putting it through our mind that we need to look like that or we won’t be accepted by society. This is a very big issue especially with multiple new unprecedented pressures with this generation because this can cause many unhealthy long-term effects, such as:
•Self-consciousness in intimate relationships
Some physical effects that can occur include:
•Stress induced hair loss
•Swelling (due to not eating)
•Sensory changes; pain or numbness
WHAT CAUSES IT:
Research has shown that negative body image can be influenced by (but is not limited to):
•The exposure to photos or videos of an “idealistic” body through social media platforms
•The relationship you have with your family and friends
•Piercing pressure to maintain a certain lifestyle, eat a strict diet or always healthy and look a certain way. All in hopes to have the “perfect body”
•How people you’re close to feel and speak on the topic of bodies and appearances
HOW DO YOU GET INVOLVED IN BODY POSITIVITY?
→Cut out negative self-talk…
→Surround yourself with positivity…
→Absorb body positive messages…
→Compliment others freely…
→Focus on the things you like about yourself…
→Have a ‘healthy’ mentality, not a ‘skinny’ mentality…
→STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS !!
HOW I AM GOING TO HELP:
I am going to try my best to do as much as I can to shed a positive light on this topic by posting content regarding body image/body positivity, advertising some meetings that go over how to cope with having a negative mental space concerning your body image and help transition from struggling with self-acceptance to loving your body for everything it is. Any other way I can show my support, I will take the necessary actions to do so.
